The Studio d'Improvisation de Montréal presents an intensive workshop on
FREE JAZZ!

Saturdays: June 14, 21, 28
+ Concert Sunday June 29 at 8pm

Over 3 Saturday afternoons we'll dive into some serious music (Ayler, Coleman, Coltrane, Cherry and more) and some serious questions: is Free Jazz a style? A kind of repertoire? A period of jazz history? Is it the same as 'improvised music' or 'noise'?

Workshop leader Ellwood Epps has worked with some of the music's masters: William Parker, Steve Lacy, Marshall Allen, Joe McPhee and Henry Grimes to name a few. He will be happy to share the musical, philosophical, political and spiritual insights gained during a lifetime of working in creative music with wonderful humans like these.

Through exercises, discussions, and lots of PLAYING, we'll be aiming to make our own music happen!

To top it all off, the ensemble will perform together at one of Montreal's most important Loft spaces, in the Free Jazz tradition. (Sunday June 29, 8pm)

The workshop is open to musicians of intermediate and advanced skills. Extensive jazz experience or reading NOT necessary. All instruments welcome. Drums and piano provided on-site. The workshop is offered in French and English.

Sign up now, space is very limited!

Special price! $60 if prepaid by June 9 (non-refundable)
After June 9, cost is $75 ($25 non-refundable to reserve, and the ballance on first day of workshop)

To sign up, send an email to studioimpromontreal@gmail.com.

Studio d'Improvisation presents l'unvers de Sun Ra!
Saturdays from 2pm-4pm at Casa Obscura
april 26 and may 3+10
To sign up, send an email to studioimpromontreal@gmail.com.

Come explore the musical universe of Sun Ra in celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth! Nicolas Caloia knows the subject well, with a huge collection of Ra's compositions and many years of experience performing them. He'll be joining forces with SIM director Ellwood Epps in guiding a 3-week workshop exploring Sun Ra's universal music as a path for improvisation.

In 2010 Nicolas and Ellwood had the pleasure of playing with Marshall Allen, member of the Sun Ra Arkestra since the 50's and its leader since Ra's death in 1993. They will be joining Marshall again on May 15 at the FIMAV festival along with the Ratchet Orchestra, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sun Ra's birth, and Marshall's 90th.

In the workshop we will work with Sun Ra's music, both on paper, and as pure sound. We'll be arranging the music specially for the participants, and combining it with our own improvisations to create a new universe of sound. Come travel the spaceways with us in this unique opportunity!!

About Sun Ra, Nicolas, and Ellwood:

Sun Ra stands as one of the most important musical figures of the past 100 years. His Arkestra began in the 50's and is still performing today. His musical universe was immense, linking the early days of jazz big bands, pioneering work with synthesizers, and multidisciplinary performances including dance and lavish space costumes. Many great jazz musicians worked with Ra, including Don Cherry, Coleman Hawkins, and Pharoah Sanders. His work as a thinker is important, linking the culture of ancient Egypt and the mythology of outer space into a new way of envisioning contemporary experience. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Ra

Nicolas Caloia is a bassist and composer, and leader of the Ratchet Orchestra since the mid 90's. Ratchet has been performing Sun Ra's music since a 1998 tribute on Ra's birthday, and has released 4 recordings combining Caloia's and Sun Ra's compositions.www.nicolascaloia.net

Ellwood Epps is a trumpet player and the director of the Studio d'Improvisation de Montréal since 2009. He has performed across Canada and the US, and is active as the director of l'Envers since 2008.www.ellwoodepps.blogspot.com

The workshop is open to musicians of all levels and experiences. Reading or jazz skills are not necessary. The workshop will be given in French and English, depending on the needs of participants. The cost is $80.

Voice as an instrument for improvisers: Workshop with Géraldine Eguiluz

Sunday March 9, 1pm-3pm

This is a workshop for singers and instrumentalists who like to sing! Géraldine Eguiluz will share her unique and dynamic approach to improvising as a vocalist. Come and bring your instruments, your voice, and your spirit for an inspiring and insightful workshop with one of the country's most amazing improvising singers!

Voice of the earth, with echoes of jazz and south-american music, making nymphs and spirits of the ages come to life, it is in the heart of transformation, idioms and languages, people and memories, that Géraldine Eguiluz has created music for the last twenty years.
Mrs. Eguiluz has been on a roll since the late eighties, with ensembles going from solo to chamber orchestras, with the Mexican collectives Tritonia and Bacaanda Multimedia (1996-2003), New York and Canadian ensembles in the last decade: The Kitchen House Blend (2004) Yumbotik Trio (2008) Lafayette String Quartet (2011) Albedo (2009-2011) Firey Strings Company (2013), SEA Trio (2013) Ensemble Arkea (2013). These ensembles have included the likes of Sean Conly, Michaël Attias, Satoshi Takeishi, Isaiah Cecaarelli, Ellwood Epps, Scott Thomson and Yves Charuest.
She works in the experimental, improvisation, musique actuelle and jazz scenes, but her music has the print of latinamerican, afro-american, aboriginal and contemporary sounds. Eguiluz's multidisciplinary collaborations include video, theatre, danse and circus, recorded electronic and multimedia music, but she mostly composes for acoustic instruments. She has produced her own recordings with her group Tritonia in México, and her canadian recordings Time of Light and Rubedo’ ro are soon to be released on the Malasartes Label; both are distributed by actuellecd.com,
Eguiluz is currently collaborationg with Montréal's avant-garde musicians like the Joker noise choir, and she concentrates composing and singing for her band Rubedo’ ro, as well as her duo with bassist Stéphane Diamantakiou.
Citizen of the world, Eguiluz was born in México, and grew up in Colombia, Portugal and France, and as a musician, toured Italy, Germany, USA, Cuba, Venezuela and Brasil. She emmigrated to Québec city in 2006 and moved to Montreal in 2011. She has played with well known musicians, but keeps her path on present and on welcoming what is to come.

The workshop is open to musicians of all backgrounds and levels of experience, and will be taught in French and English. Piano, drums, p.a. and some amplifiers will be provided for you on-site.
The cost of the workshop is $25. To sign up, send an email to studioimpromontreal@gmail.com.
